If he is nice to you it is because he you have something he wants or needs; and he believes that you will not deliver if he doesn't put on a little show.

Gunji is an introvert that would consider a good day one in which not a single person speaks to or acknowledges him.He uses rudeness to push people away as quickly as possible; however, if the initial attempt does not suffice in getting the other person to leave he will have no idea what to do. The definition of all bark, no bite. He doesn't do well in conversations and if you can ignore his rancid attitude, it is quite easy to whittle him down quickly.He's also a compulsive liar and will say anything to get people to think better of him if he thinks a good reputation can benefit him. Or if he thinks the truth will upset someone he cares about.

Background
Born in Sui-No-Sato to fishmongers, Gunji didn't learn much of the world outside of their village. The beginning stages of his life were filled with traditional, conservative learning, and life under the Ruby Sea.Early on, he was a rebellious child with a callous personality. Often rubbing others the wrong way with his blunt and informal speech, he spent much of his time alone. This was something he was fine with, much preferring to bury his nose in a book over consorting with others.Once he'd grown old enough he'd begun to train with a sword. He'd always admired the guards of the Ruby Princess, and if it meant he didn't have to take up his father's trade of fishing, he'd do anything.It was harder than he'd thought, of course, though that was never enough to make Gunji give up. The pressure to get stronger, hone his skills, and adhere to the rigid, conservative ideals of his village were overwhelming to him as a teenager. He rebelled when he could, sneaking out whenever he wasn't busy with a sword or wrangling his siblings; keeping his activities as secret as he could manage.It was a blessing to him that his siblings never found out what their older brother was up to (he thought). Especially as Yomi tended to follow him around like a baby chick attaches itself to its mother. His younger sister was a spitfire of a child, never leaving his side and declaring to anyone who would listen that she would become just like her oldest brother. To the horror of, quite literally, anyone who heard her.What his sister was unaware of, was the village-wide disapproval of the actions of her brother. Gunji was always too loud, too rude, too rough, too mean, too… everything. Too improper for the stringent, oppressive ideals that soaked into Sui-no-Sato. He did his best to dissuade her from her idealization of him, tried to tell her that she could do better than set him as her standard. Yomi was far more capable than him; she always learned faster, had more of a talent for the blade. She would never fold under pressure the way he did.He kept his stress hidden from both his siblings. There was an attempt to keep it from his parents, but he could never read the way they looked at him. They weren’t forward the way that others were, with their disapproval of his actions, but they never came to his defense either. And he knew the look his mother gave him, at least, was one of pity; when he would come home late at night, making too much noise as he attempted to sneak back into the house and she would come out of the bedroom to see if it was him.Gunji’s self-loathing started at the young age of sixteen, not knowing that this was something that would follow him the rest of his life. As the years passed, he assumed that he would be trapped in Sui-no-Sato; a village that had long since become a prison to him. He’d begun to use his rebellion as overindulgence, taking any chance he could to take his mind off of the stress that had been building inside of him since childhood. Hoping that being desired by others would fill the growing hole within himself.His passions for anything proper and respectable waned, the drive to amount to anything drying up. The thought that he would never be good enough built up and up, creating the idea that there was no need to bother if nothing he did could amount to anything. He gave up training his ability with a blade, gave up his dream to become a guard. When he wasn’t sneaking out he was hiding himself in his room, his face buried in a book, much like when he was a child. He read anything he could get his hands on, keeping his mind busy with as much knowledge as he could fit into it when he wasn’t in the company of others.By the time he was banished at the age of 19, he was more than tired of his supposed "home."He would spend the next years, between the ages of 19 and 24, in Kugane learning medicine and becoming a complete menace. Unleashed upon the surface world, he would only come to realize how much he truly loathed being around people. Yet, despite this, he pursued work as a chirurgeon in order to help others.. and, when anyone would come to Gunji in need of any type of assistance, he wouldn't give a second thought to giving his aid.During his time in Kugane, he would meet a young viera that would become his best friend. Just as rough around the edges and ill-fitting in society as he, they would find solace in each other's company. Eventually, soon after Gunji turned 24, they would decide to go to Eorzea together, where he has been since.
